Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is, as the name suggests, a spectrum condition. Two persons diagnosed with ASD may have differing levels of severity of needs. In Singapore, a child with mild ASD is understood to have lower support needs than a child with moderate-to-severe ASD.

It is important to get advice from your child’s medical and allied professionals and/or early intervention (EI) professionals on the school setting that would best support your child’s needs. There are children with ASD learning in mainstream schools, special education (SPED) schools offering the national curriculum, and SPED schools offering a customised curriculum.

Children diagnosed with mild intellectual disability or moderate to severe intellectual disability may take the customised curriculum in a special education (SPED) school that can support their needs.

Children diagnosed with multiple disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy can take the national curriculum in a mainstream primary school, or take the customised curriculum in a special education (SPED) school that can support their needs.

Most children diagnosed with hearing loss (HL) can access learning across our mainstream primary and secondary schools. Many of them can benefit from the use of assistive technology devices, such as a Frequency Modulation (FM) System, to aid with better listening in their classrooms.

Some students may require specialised support to reach their potential for learning and/or independent living. For these students, they may attend HL-designated mainstream schools or special education (SPED) schools. The type of school they enrol in will depend on the student’s main communication mode and cognitive abilities (i.e., whether they can access the national curriculum or a customised SPED curriculum). The HL designated mainstream schools are resourced with specialised teachers. These students may also be supported by MOE funding for assistive technology and the itinerant school-based educational support services if needed.

There are two broad communication approaches for HL education, namely Oral approach and Signing approach.

Most children diagnosed with visual impairment (VI) can access learning across our mainstream primary and secondary schools. Many of them can benefit from the use of assistive technology devices, such as a text-to-speech software, electronic magnifiers etc., to aid learning in their classrooms.

Some students may require specialised support to reach their potential for learning and/or independent living (e.g., use of braille). For these students, they may attend VI-designated mainstream secondary schools or special education (SPED) school. The type of school they enrol in will depend on the student’s cognitive abilities (i.e., whether they can access the national curriculum or a customised SPED curriculum). The VI designated mainstream schools are resourced with specialised teachers. These students may also be supported by MOE funding for assistive technology and the itinerant school-based educational support services if needed.
